EMAS, the “Eco-Management and Audit Scheme” of the European Union, is considered to be the most ambitious and comprehensive environmental management system worldwide. Each year, family-owned company Werner & Mertz, the manufacturer behind Frosch, appoints an independent inspector to take a close look at the overall site together with the production and logistics chain. The objective is to determine new measures for delivering sustainable environmental protection in cooperation with Werner & Mertz.
EMAS delivers improvements that go far beyond the legal requirements. The EMAS environmental management system ensures that the environmental sustainability performance of Werner & Mertz is transparent for customers. The system has now already been in place for over ten years.
Since 2003 Werner & Mertz GmbH has subjected its sites in Mainz – and since 2005 in the Austrian town of Hallein – to annual inspections pursuant to the EMAS guidelines. During these inspections an independent expert investigates all of the plants, the production lines and logistics facilities, the optimisation initiatives are exploited and the effect reassessed.
Thanks to its systematic environmental management system, Werner & Mertz has been able to significantly reduce its consumption of electricity and fuel at its Mainz site among others.
